How to Restore Your Lamp's Original Finish Without Damaging Its Value

Restoring a cherished lamp to its original beauty can be a rewarding project, but it's important to handle each piece carefully to preserve its value. At Table M, we understand the nuances of antique and vintage lighting, whether you're polishing brass, restoring wood finishes, or refreshing lampshades. As a trusted resource for designers and private individuals, we’re dedicated to providing custom and bespoke table lamps and fine antique lighting—pieces that seamlessly blend into both historic and modern spaces.

Our journey in restoration is a testament to our commitment. David Mayne, who founded

Table M in Denver, Colorado, brings over 25 years of experience in the design and architectural community, having served as Vice President of Lewis Mittman (now known as Ferrell + Mittman). After diving into the antique lighting world, he established Table M as a destination for lighting and small tables that combine artistry and historical integrity. David's dedication to quality led to the creation of an in-house workshop where each piece undergoes complete electrical restoration, ensuring safety while maintaining authenticity.

Here’s a glimpse into how we approach lamp restoration—and how you can, too—in a way that honors the piece’s original character and value:

1. Polishing Metal Finishes

  • Assess the Metal: Different metals—such as brass, bronze, and silver—require different care. Always start by identifying the metal to use the appropriate cleaning method. Some vintage and antique lamps were made of steel or white metal and then brass- or silver-plated.

  • Check for Lacquer on the Metal: Often, a lacquer is applied over the finished metal. If this lacquer can be removed, the metal underneath can be polished.

  • Choose the Right Polish: A gentle, non-abrasive polish and a soft cloth are ideal for brass and bronze. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives that could remove the plating.

  • Test a Small Area First: Just as we do in our workshop, test any polish or cleaner on a hidden area to ensure it doesn't damage the finish.

2. Restoring Wood Finishes

  • Cleaning Without Over-Cleaning: Dust and debris can often be removed with a damp, soft cloth. When needed, we use a mild wood cleaner, applying it carefully to avoid stripping any protective finishes.

  • Using Natural Oils for Preservation: For particularly dry wood, consider a light coat of linseed oil or beeswax. This preserves the finish while reviving the wood’s natural beauty.

  • Repairing Scratches Carefully: Small scratches can be minimized with a matching wood repair pen. For deeper restoration, we use traditional techniques that avoid disrupting the original finish.

3. Refreshing Lampshades

  • Gentle Dusting: A simple, consistent dusting routine goes a long way. Use a soft brush or vacuum with a low setting to remove dust.

  • Spot Cleaning: For stains, we use a lampshade dry cleaning puff known as “Rubgum,” testing it first on an inconspicuous area to avoid damage.

  • Replacing When Necessary: Sometimes, the best way to restore a shade is with a carefully chosen replacement. We help clients find shades that maintain the lamp’s character and complement its vintage or antique appeal. Remember to bring your lamp for proper fittings.
